Salary: $85,000 - $115,000, commensurate with experience and qualifications

About the Role

Ben Hall Law is rapidly growing law firm seeking an attorney to join our experienced abuse and neglect practice. This attorney will provide legal representation in juvenile court proceedings, handle complex litigation, and work closely with department clients and other professionals to protect the best interests of children and families.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in representing the department in child abuse and neglect cases, including initial hearings, review hearings, trials, and appeals.
  • Prepare and draft legal arguments and pleadings in juvenile court proceedings.
  • Advise senior counsel on legal issues.
  • Work with department staff, caseworkers, and investigators to develop and implement case strategies.
  • Act as second chair at trials and hearings with senior counsel.
  • Assist in settlement negotiations, mediation, and other alternative dispute resolution processes.
  • Conduct thorough legal research and stay updated on relevant laws and precedents affecting child welfare.
  • Work effectively with parents, guardians, and other attorneys involved in cases.
  • Demonstrate the ability and willingness to work under time-sensitive deadlines in a fast-paced environment with multiple competing priorities.
  • Assist with firm trial preparations, including, on occasion, acting as opposing counsel for mock trials/hearings.

Qualifications

Education: Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school.
Bar Admission: Licensed to practice law in Michigan or eligible for licensure in Michigan before the start date.
Experience:

  • 0-3 years of experience practicing law.
  • Experience in juvenile court preferred.

Skills:

  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong legal research and analytical abilities.
  • Commitment to client advocacy and ethical practice.

Preferred Attributes

  • Experience with abuse and neglect cases.
  • Established relationships within the local legal and judicial communities in Michigan.
  • Fluency in a foreign language.
